The basic history of the Industry
A long long time ago
The security industry started in the form of outlaws being paid to sort out the other outlaws, but in essence security has been around since the dawn of time with the existence of mercenaries. We are of course talking prior to the1800s it was in essence some wild west experience of protection money or payback subsequently it then became a service night watch men normally accountable to local councils and mayors.
We are of course talking here prior to the start of the professional British police which was set up in London by Sir Robert Peel when he became Home Secretary in 1822. Peel's Metropolitan Police Act 1829 established a full-time, professional and centrally-organised police force for the Greater London area known as the Metropolitan Police.
Pre 2001
The industry has come a long way, however a security company could be set up by muscle and power rather than brains and customer care. lets go back to Reg and Ronny Krays time, where protection money was expected. However in the late 80 / 90s the industry was beginning to become a professional outfit, however there were still many rouges operating in the services. In the late 90s some local councils and firms came together knowing the need for more professionalism and standards.
A local authority License was created in many parts, in fact we were the first company in North Wales to send our staff on the training course for this license, however although training was needed under then SITO security industry training organisation, much more was needed.
Post 2001
in 2001 the the Government set up the Security Industry Act subsequently creating the Security Industry Authority. It is now illegal to privately operate without a personal SIA license. To obtain the license one must complete the course for the appropriate license in question, and go through several checks carried out directly by the SIA, including such as the right to work, Criminality checks and general vetting. This naturally has given the industry more credibility and accountability. It has enabled the industry to look, feel and be more professional. This naturally creates more pride in the role you are employed, knowing that we are all professionally trained and licensed to do the job. The benefits do not stop there, it provides reassurance and confidence to our customers that they deserve, especially companies with the ACS accreditation such as Keywise Security.
